I am a huge Alanis Morissette fan, but it is rare to have an opportunity to remix or mash her songs up because she rarely releases acapellas or instrumentals. When she parodied The Black Eyed Peas in 2007, I was inspired to make this mash up combining the two versions. It was released as a Bootie exclusive on their April 2007 Top 10 list.
In case you were living under a rock in 2007, here’s Alanis’ classic viral video.
Otto Von Schirach did a dirty electro cover of Prince’s “When Doves Cry” called “Sliced Doves On Codeine.” Otto’s mix is cool but his vocals on the track are a little too scary for me, so I mashed up Otto’s beat and Prince’s original version into this.
This is another one I’ve been playing out for the last month and that was featured on one of my recent mixtapes. I’ve always loved “Freak Like Me” by Adina Howard. When I heard the beat from DJ Class’ new track “I’m The Ish,” I thought Adina’s vocals would sound nice over top, turning the song into a B’more stomper.
Macy Gray’s vocal on this track is undeniably hot. I mashed her vocal with the Out of Office Remix beat of Michael Woods feat Inaya Day’s “Natural High” to turn this track into a hot house track for 2009.
I made it in 2005 after buying a used 12″ of Cameo’s “Word Up” at Amoeba. I began spinning the instrumental and wondered what would fit with it — I played the “Hollaback Girl” acapella and it sounded pretty cool. So I decided to do a proper mashup. Sometimes it’s easy like that.
The original version of “Touch My Body” was too slow to really get the club jumpin’, so I set to work crafting it into the club banger I’d been hoping for. The instrumental of Australian pop-singer Ricki-Lee’s “Can’t Touch It” was the perfect fit. I also added in Fatman Scoop to hype up the track — he always manages to drive people into a frenzy on the dancefloor. This remix was released on a special promotional remix vinyl.
Sibley is one to watch. A Bay Area native, she’s now working hard in L.A. launching her music career with legendary producer Marc Kinchen. “Donuts” is a catchy, sweet pop song that’ll have you on a run to Krispy Kreme in no time.
“I eat donuts man, I eat donuts. I eat donuts man, I eat donuts. Your car, your cash, your ice, don’t want it. Donuts man, I eat donuts.” Word!
Check out the house mashup I made with Mason/Princess Superstar’s “Perfect [Exceeder].”
A friend challenged me to turn Chromeo’s brief “Mommas Boy” acapella into a house stomper. I laid it over Illicit’s remix of Madison Avenue’s “Who the Hell Are You,” did some effects with the vocals — and here’s what came out. Now start stompin’!
